Setting up a club
The main problems of Powerlifting or Weightlifting is a training centre.
Most Local Authorities do not have the facility or staff inclined toward
the sports. They have to remove free weights, to eliminate litigation or
lower staffing levels.
Private gyms in the main do not welcome the sports, due to many of the
following reasons: Noise, Dust, Lack of the right instructors, No kids
allowed, Spoils cosmetic image. These are a few to go on with.
They are not looking at the big picture!! Most gyms have free time or
quiet periods. Where an offer to local schools the use of at a
discounted price, would not only bring in dead time revenue but will
introduce the next generation of customers. To offer sports amenity and
invite members to form an all - inclusive club can ultimately be of
benefit (e.g. Increase membership, clubs may be able to apply for grants
towards equipment, refurbishment and creating disabled access,
additional qualifications - BWLA Coach for example, Safe weight training
GCSE for schools). For all these, fees could be paid. These are but a
few of the benefits to the Private or L.A to consider.
For the guys who train in the garage or the old church hall with home
made gear and would love an Eleiko power set. Form your own club, this
is not as hard as it seems. But it does need a bit of research of your
own area.
People that may be of help in developing your project.
> Local Council Sports Co - ordinator or leisure dept.
> If you are looking for a suitable site again L.A.
> CVS (Community Volunteer Service) the will most certainly have a
funding officer and someone to help in forming your constitution. They
can offer advise on setting up your bank account, teach you simple
accounting and many other bits that might be needed.
> Local knowledge is important to the kind of funding or grant aid that
may be available. This is where your CVS will be of great help to you.
Don't hesitate to use them.
Things needed to form a club:
> Committee with three principle officers i.e. Chair, treasurer and
secretary.
> A written constitution
> A set of account & bank account with at least 2 signatures.
> Must be all inclusive - race, disabilities, age and gender.
To offer some encouragement Parkhead & Wansbeck Powersports, have, from
first meeting two and a half years ago. Raised over £40,000.00 achieved
260 members. Have 9 British Champions and 17 divisional champions. This
has enabled us to now put Safe Weight Training in the L.E.A. curriculum
for which we are tutors. Much more has been attained and this may give
some hope for others to have a go.
