EPF masters bench press 22nd to 24th November 2007
Team manager: Ian Kinghorn
Headline: 9 lifters get 7 medals as well as taking 3rd place in masters 3
competition.
[Detailed results at the end]
This was a good trip to Zlin, Czech Republic, the event being well run by the
Czech Powerlifting Federation. The venue (and accommodation) were in the Hotel
Mosckva which provided good facilities for the event.
Our team traveled by various routes to suit their convenience of departure point
from the UK and their respective availability, but all members of the team had
arrived on the 22nd November 2007, the day the competition got underway for the
Masters 3 lifters (in our case as we had no women competitors on the team who
would have also started on this day).
The masters 3 guys got off to a great start with 3 medals from 5 and sufficient
points collectively to record 3rd place in the team competition. The Masters 3
team also had two competitors who are masters 4 (Bill MacFadyen and Norman
Anderson) who placed 1st and 3rd respectively in the masters 4 overall
competition for best lifter based on wilks points.
Day 2 saw the masters 2 men and the lighter masters 1 men lifting. We had two
masters 2 lifters, both of whom finished 3rd in their respective classes, and
overall they finished 6th in the team competition. Gary Prater won the 67.5kg
class and is the European Masters Bench Press Champion for 2007.
This left Ian Kinghorn (me) to bring up the rear on the final day in the masters
1 100kg class. Suffering as you know from injury this was to be a further test
of my recovery, which I must say went as well as I could have expected and I
finished 3rd, which when combined with Gary’s win meant we finished 5th in the
master 1 team competition.
Overall, as team manager, I was delighted with the trip and the results. I would
like to thank all lifters for their participation and support throughout the
event, and also thank those who traveled with the team who also provided support
and help throughout.

Western European Championships 2007
21-22nd September. Eghezee, Belgium
Team Manager’s Report.
At some ungodly hour of the morning 10 lifters, 3 officials and 1 guest, met at
Stansted airport, were presented with their Great Britain t-shirt (thanks to
Arthur Hoey for those) and set off for Eghezee in Belgium. This town is so small
it’s not on many maps, but after only a 45 minute flight, we were met at
Charleroi airport by the organiser Jean-Claude Verdonk and his wife. Transfer
was even shorter than the flight, and we were first to arrive at the hotel. An
hour’s wait before we could access the rooms (well, we did arrive at about 9am)
then everyone went to get some well deserved sleep before the competition proper
the next day.
A few movers and shakers at the technical meeting, but nothing that affected us
too much, we still predicted we could place 2nd in the Women’s Team Competition,
and 3rd in the men’s, provided we didn’t mess up.
At 56kg, Jenny Hunter weighed twice to make weight, but then produced three well
fought squats to 140kg, surprisingly only her opening bench press of 82.5kg, but
made two good deadlifts to 165kg running out of energy before the last one.
Still, a 387.5kg total and our first champion.
Nicola Payne, lifting in the 60kg class, made two strong squats to 132.5kg and
was unlucky to over balance at the top with her third. Three benches and
deadlifts to equal PBs of 77.5kg and 172.5kg respectively, secured another gold
medal for Great Britain.
Medals were presented at the end of the group, we all stood up for Jenny, only
to find the organiser didn’t have our national anthem loaded on his computer!
Not to be deterred the British Team gave an enthusiastic rendition of God Save
the Queen, before a somewhat bemused audience. That obviously proved too much
for everyone’s eardrums, as they miraculously ‘found’ the national anthem in
time for Nicola’s presentation five minutes later.
Our first male lifter was newcomer Robert Palmer at 82.5kg. Squatting without a
belt he made three good squats to a PB of 255kg, he was unlucky to have his
first bench turned down, but made 185kg on his second and 187.5kg for a safe
third. Two strong deadlifts to 250kg gave him a silver medal and a total of
692.5kg – up 7.5kg on his British total.
Then the fun started! We had two lifters at 90kg, John Porter and Joe Bullock.
John’s head was somewhere else and it just wasn’t going to happen for him today,
not helped by different referees and a few interesting interpretations of the
rules. Scraped in a 270kg squat, and a 165kg bench press, then woke up (with
some encouragement from the coach) to pull three deadlifts to 270kg, a 705kg
total and 5th place in the group.
Joe was firing on all cylinders, a bit over-enthusiastic with his first squat,
powered it up, then over balanced at the top. Took 295kg for a good second and
was unlucky to have what looked like a good 302.5kg, turned down 2 to 1 on his
third. Joe made two bench presses to 180kg, before running out of steam on the
deadlift. A strong 260kg opener, then pulled 270kg to the top and lost his grip,
nothing left to give to the third. A 735kg total and 4th place. End of lifting
for the day and we could all go back to the hotel, get fed and watered, and rest
up ready for the next day.
The women started off Sunday with a select few in the audience to watch the
squats. All three of our female lifters today were going to Ostrava ten days
later to compete in the World Masters’ Championships, so we weren’t looking for
any fancy numbers, just steady lifting and solid totals – and that was exactly
what we got.
Jackie Blasbery, ever the professional, went 9 from 9 in the 75kg class; squat
160kg, BP 105kg, Deadlift 182.5, for a 447.5kg total and first place.
Jean Maton, lifting at 82.5kg, got herself out of line on her last squat, her
only failure in an otherwise spotless display of powerlifting going 170kg squat,
110kg BP, 182.5kg deadlift for a 462.5kg total and another gold medal.
In the 90kg class, Sue Hollands was up against the mighty Ileja Strik from the
Netherlands. Barring disaster for the Dutch competitor, Sue was always going
after a Silver medal. Ileja didn’t have a great day but was in good enough form
to take the 90kg title and the best lifter award.
Sue lifted consistently, making three easy squats to 175kg, then had her first
bench of 82.5kg turned down 2 to 1 for not being on her chest!? – after giving
her the press signal the chief referee then red lighted the lift!? Sue took it
again and made it, followed by a comfortable third with 85kg. Three strong
deadlifts to 165kg gave Sue a 422.5kg total, and a silver medal at a senior
championships – all as a Masters II lifter.
The Dutch women’s team had expected to win the Team competition with ease.
However, they only sent four lifters, and when Judith Meerding couldn’t get up
with any of her squats, they lost her Wilkes total, which meant Great Britain
women won a well deserved, if unexpected Team title.
Lots of controversy in the heavier mens' groups. Ultra strict refereeing, some
ambitious poundage postings, three lifters bombing out, and some 50 out of a
total of 126 attempts not passed by the referees! A few threats from a lifter
towards our own Mick Hunnam in the referee’s chair saw one lifter asked to leave
the building, and tempers getting very frayed!
In the midst of all this Great Britain had two newcomers lifting. Ian Hawkins
lifted in the 110kg class after arriving somewhat over the 100kg he was selected
at, eventually weighing in at 107kg, so Sam Harrison moved up to the 125kg
class.
Neither lifter had a good day, and there was lots of adjusting poundages to make
sure both got a total. Ian scraped a 270kg squat 2 to 1, before moving onto
bench press. As Ian had brought a brand new bench shirt we couldn’t risk him
wearing it to start so a 160kg opener was done in a t-shirt, risked the shirt
for a comfortable 212.5kg second attempt, then posted 220kg for his third.
Against the advice of the coach, he changed his shirt only to find the bar would
only go to 4 inches above his chest and no further. Ian rallied on the deadlift,
and carefully chosen poundages gave him 272.5kg, a 755kg total and, due to a
number of bombers, a surprise bronze medal.
Sam made a 305kg squat at the third time of asking, not low enough on the first
two. A 185kg bench press opener was passed but 190kg wouldn’t go twice. Not
wanting to take any chances, Sam took a very easy 240kg opening deadlift, before
pulling two more to deadlift 280kg, total 770kg and place 4th in his class.
The tussle for the men’s Team title was expected to be between Germany and
Denmark. After three of the Danish team failed to total, the Germans claimed the
prize with ease, and Great Britain were handed second place.
Best male lifter was the 100kg lifter from Luxembourg, Anibal Coimbra.
Overall, seasoned lifters performed as competently as we would expect, and newer
lifters learned a lot about competing internationally and lifting as part of a
team (I hope). Barrie did a super job coaching (and has a few more grey hairs
into the bargain), Mick did his stint refereeing, lifters helped each other in
the warm up room, Sue deputised ‘doing the numbers’ for me superbly when needed,
and Robert’s girlfriend Katie became team photographer extraordinaire for the
weekend.
At the end of all this we came away more successful than we had predicted in
terms of individual medals and Team trophies, a fact that we celebrated at the
Banquet on the Saturday night (thanks for the Champagne Barrie & Gaston).
After Team photos, we headed home the next day with a few very welcome
additional pieces of hardware than when we came – we have the excess baggage
receipts to prove it!
Next year Denmark – bring it on!!

World Junior & Sub Junior Powerlifting Championships 2007
3rd-8th September, Guy Mocquet 2 Gymnasium, La Garde ,Southern France.
Three hundred and forty one lifters from thirty nations gathered together in the
lifters' village in Le Pradet near to the venue in La Ville La Garde on the
South coast of France on Sunday, September 2nd. The British team arrived via
nice in good time for the lifters to settle in and rest while team manager John
Halfacre and coaches, Fred McKenzie and Paul Rees, attended the IPF technical
meeting.
Chloe Lambeth 44kg Sub Junior was first to compete on Monday morning, reporting
for the weigh in at 8.00 am sharp. Although the IPF organisational machine
started a little slowly, with information on the lifting order only available
after the competition had started, Chloe was able to take things in her stride
and produce nine good lifts, setting British and Commonwealth records. Bronze
medals in the squat and deadlift, and fourth overall was a fine achievement for
a sixteen year old. Well done Chloe, personal bests in squat 95kg....bench press
40kg.....deadlift 112.5kg and total 247.5kg gave us all a good start.
Steven Tyers 56kg Sub Junior was next to lift in the afternoon session. The warm
up area was large and well equipped with four full platforms with Pallini
equipment, duplicating that being used on the main competition stage. The
multi-national flavour of the athletes and coaches present was exciting and a
tinge intimidating... The temperature in the building was stifling in the
afternoons and made warming up quite challenging. Although Steve does not like
the heat he got his act together and produced personal bests in squat 130kg and
bench press 90kg but achieved a little less than he expected in the deadlift
with 182.5kg. His total of 402.5kg was another best and his eighth place got
Great Britain into the team points. Another excellent performance. Scott Peisley,
Australia pulled a 221kg world record using a technique he could call his very
own. This is four times bodyweight.
Next into action for us were the 75kg classes on Wednesday afternoon. The heat
was very oppressive with some relief available outside in the shade and in the
breeze. The main auditorium was well appointed and the whole area was almost
saturated with large screens showing the lifting and profiling the lifters
preparing for the lift. Results boards were also on view and a DVD is available
for anyone interested. Scott Sales and Shaun Doble were first to compete. Over
thirty lifters contested these classes and three groups followed each other
through their squats then bench and so on. Conditions were tough and both
lifters pulled out positive performances following one or two scares. Scott has
another year in this age group and has time to get the the best out of his
equipment. Shaun was 12th and Scott was 11th with totals of 482.5kg and 505kg
respectively. Pieter de Waal , South Africa won the class with a 708.5kg total.
James White, Junior 75kg competed in group 3 and put together a fine total of
652.5kg , placing 7th. His deadlift of 267.5kg won the gold, a super performance
in difficult conditions. James had pulled 290kg in Bournemouth two weeks before.
You may be aware that James also won the gold in the European Junior
Championships three months ago.
Another early call on Thursday when Jonathon Biggins weighed in at 8am. This
Scottish lifter is very talented and has enormous potential. Using equipment for
only a short period hardly gave him a chance to lift to his full capability, but
he produced several new best performances and came close to a medal in the bench
press. He went 230kg....150kg....240kg.....620kg and placed 8th , again in the
team points. Sergey Vayigang,
Kazakhstan, benched 217.5kg for a new World Record.
Mark Gregory and Andy Ly competed in the 90kg Junior class on Thursday evening.
Mark gave all of us a scare when he started warming up for the squat. Sudden
severe pain in his shin when squatting in his wraps nearly resulted in us having
to withdraw him. However after emergency treatment and much analysis and
decision making, he bravely got enough done to open at a modest lift for him and
he gradually got better through the rounds
Finishing with 270kg....185kg....250kg.....705kg.a personal best total and a
commonwealth record in the bench press. Mark has another two years as a junior
and will hopefully challenge for medals in the future. Andy Ly has another year
as a junior and lifted very well placing 7th with a strong performance of
280kg...160kg...270kg...710kg. I believe he is ready for a big breakthrough and
maybe even a return to the 82.5kg class. Look out you seniors, he is on your
case. Andy also achieved commonwealth records which we have claimed on his
behalf.
On Friday we all witnessed Konstatin Pozdeev, 100kg Junior, go
370kg...200...340..910kg. All in good form with real depth in his squat.
Refereeing was certainly tougher here than I see in the UK, similar in
interpretation to that at the Commonwealth Championships. I am sure some of you
will remember that.
Saturday came. The last day of lifting. Ben Banks 110kg class was set to weigh
in at 8am but the shuttle bus had an accident on the way to pick us up. Much
anxiety and waiting could not have helped the lifters, but Ben was patient and
eventually all athletes were able to get started. Achieving the depth necessary
here in the squat, Ben went 285kg. He followed this with a comfortable 230kg
bronze medal winning Bench Press. In the deadlift we had two targets, an
individual medal and a crack at the overall bronze. A positive 315kg pull gave
us hope but the required 327.5kg was just too heavy on the day. Two bronze
medals was a great achievement. Well done Ben. Look out seniors this man has a
lot more in the bank (sorry).
Five medals was an excellent achievement for the team. Well done everybody. This
was a team that worked for each other. The leadership of John Halfacre and the
support of the senior management of our sport made this happen. Now is the time
to focus all juniors out there on the British Junior championships in Dover at
the end of January 2008. Then next year we will be able to send an even stronger
team to the World Championships in South Africa.

TO
ALL BWLA MEMBERS
ENGLISH POWERLIFTING ASSOCIATION AND COMMONWEALTH POWERLIFTING.
On behalf of the Powerlifting Steering Group, due to recent enquiries and
questions regarding the “ formation” of the 2 above associations, I would like
to clarify the present position .
In the past and under previous management, the selection of English Teams for
the 4 Nations has always been made by BWLA, under the control of the Director of
Powerlifting. In 2005 the same situation took place, with the addition of the
English Commonwealth Powerlifting Team also being selected by BWLA, and again
under the control of the Director of Powerlifting.
The formation of an English Association, or similar committee to look after the
affairs of English Powerlifting has been identified, and the Steering Group have
decided that any formation of associations or committee’s to look after these 2
events will be made after the forthcoming AGM on 28th July.
Further, it has been decided that any formations will be open and all positions
will be Advertised and applications invited for these positions.
There will NOT be any pre-selected positions, and every member who wishes to
offer his or her services will be considered along with all other applicants.
At this time there is no official English, or other association representing
Powerlifting in England, and no credence should be given to any other document
claiming to be from any association. Immediately following the AGM an
announcement will be made regarding this subject.
On behalf of the Steering Group
Arthur Hoey
Powerlifting Manager.

BWLA AGM 2007
Please be advised that the BWLA AGM will be held at Lilleshall National
Sports Centre on 28th July.
Your Divisional Secretary’s should very shortly receive details of the Agenda,
which you should request a copy of if you wish to attend.
For your information you should be made aware that a motion has been put forward
for inclusion at the AGM by Mark Dickerson ,South West, Dave Kirkland, North
Midlands, and Kevin Jane, East Midlands indicating No Confidence in the Chief
Executive Officer Steve Cannon and the Chairman Bill Barton.
Members in the three Divisions above will be aware of this Notice as it has been
brought by those Divisions. However, for all others it is important that you
attend this AGM to hear the motion and to decide on how you intend to place your
vote.
Over recent months there have been many circumstances that have affected the
running of the BWLA, and now is the right time for everyone who has an interest
in the running of the Association to turn up and decide for themselves how they
wish to see the future organisation of the Association .
I would strongly urge all members to attend so that you have the opportunity to
have your opinions heard.
Yours Sincerely
Arthur Hoey
Manager Powerlifting.

2007 Men & Women European Powerlifting Championships 8 – 13 May, Koscian,
Poland.
Manager Report
The GB party meet at Luton Airport for our 7.50am flight to Poznan, Poland.
Arriving at 10.50am, we had to wait one hour for the Norwegian team to arrive,
after a 45 minutes journey to our hotel, the team check-in, something to eat and
couple of hours rest, it was time for the congress this year being election year
all officials were up for re-elections. There was no major change to the
committee. The only changes are Myriam Busselet for Vice President, S Rosi for
Law & Leg Com Chairman and Joachim Chmann for Technical chairman.
Proposals
(1) EPF membership’s fee paid at EPF account by 31st January is 250 Euro. If
paid later the fee will be 300 Euro and if not paid by 31st March, will not have
a vote at congress.
(2) At all European Championships the accommodation fee must be paid by bank
transfer to the Accommodation hotel prior to the Championships, the Organiser
championships account or payable by credit card at the hotel.
(3) The sanction fee for Organising European Championships is 500 Euro. Sanction
fee for other Championships and Cups is (WEC is 200 Euro and Danube Cup 100
Euro).
(4) The EPF establish a women committee to promote female Powerlifting and to
recruit Women into governing bodies of Powerlifting. GBR has been asked to elect
one female for the committee.
(5) EPF to elect a Media officer.
Venue
The host city for the Championships was Koscian a town in the heart of
Wielkopolska region about 50 km from Poznan. A brief history about Koscian dated
back to the 12th century, in the 13th century Kiscian was mainly a market town,
during world war 11, they suffered huge losses, after the war Kiscian rebuild
the town and develop its industry mostly in the field of tobacco and sugar beet.
The venue was Zespol Szkol sport centre near the town centre, the venue was well
laid out. The warm up room had 4 stations each with a full set of weights and
plenty of space for lifters and coaches to move about freely. The only problem
was that there was no scoreboard: this is an issue the EPF must address for
future championships. In the President's report he stated that Powerlifting must
gain popularity with the man in the street: how can we archive that, when they
do turn up and we make no effort to help them understand what is going on? This
Championship was a perfect example, we had very large crowd every day over the 5
days of lifting with some great competition but sadly no one could follow it.
Day one
The whole town plus the local schools turn out for the opening ceremony, me and
Sue Hollands were elected to carry the GB flag after all the speeches it was
down to the lifting.
Unfortunately due to a death in the family Patrick Constantine had to withdraw
from the championships, so Teresa Sawyer at 52Kg was our only lifter on day one,
she started with a comfortable 140Kg but missed 147.5Kg twice, three good bench
finishing on 97.5Kg, D/lift 140Kg, 147.5Kg missed 155Kg to finish on 385Kg total
and 5th place, a below par performance for Teresa her big problem is having no
one to train with, Marie Thornton has agreed to go down and train with her once
per week, I told her I’m looking for a 400Kg total at the worlds.
Day two
Started with Phil Richard at 67.5Kg; with Olech moving up to 75Kg this was Phil
big chance to become European champion, open on Squat with 272.5Kg but missed
282.5Kg twice, three good bench to finish on 187.5Kg, missed his opener of 230Kg
on the D/lift come back well to finish with 242.5Kg and 702.5Kg total,
unfortunately he run into Belghitti of France in tremendous form who D/lift a
brilliant 305Kg to finish on 722.5Kg total to denied Pill the title, maybe if
Phil had got his 282.5Kg squat the result could have been different. Next was
Gillian Wright in the 67.5Kg this been her first major International was a
little nervous missed her opening squat 172.5Kg but finished with a solid 180Kg
on her third. Three good Bench finished with 112.5Kg, D/lift 202.5Kg on her
second attempt missed her third to total 495Kg and second place; I think Gillian
have a lot more in her, she just need to brush up on her technique.
Day three
Jean Maton at 82.5Kg back in the senior team like a true campaigner turns in a
solid performance squat 170Kg on her third, 3 bench finishes on 110Kg, 3 good
D/lift to finish on a PB187.5Kg 8 from 9 and total 467.5Kg for third place.
Jaswinder Singh at 82.5Kg was next, lifting for his place in the team start with
three solid squat to finish on 287.5Kg, three bench finished on 195Kg, two out
of three D/lift to finish with 8 from 9 and 765Kg total and forth place, he
would not let us forget he did 8 from 9.
Day four
Was Mother and Daughter day, at 90Kg Sue Hollands a bite surprised of being
selected but was determine to make the most of it, squat 172.5Kg, Bench 90Kg and
D/lift 170Kg for a little below par total 432.5Kg and 5th place; Sue you
thoroughly deserve your place in the team. 90+ Marie Thornton only managed 225Kg
squat on her second attempt, a PB 125Kg Bench, 3 solid D/Lift to finish on 200Kg
for a 550Kg total and third place, Marie is a very strong young lady and I
predict she will break the 600Kg barrier before the end of the year, maybe at
the world. (no pressure).
Day five
Final day of lifting saw our 3 remaining lifters, Clive Henry and Dean Bowring
at 125Kg, and Jim Blanchflower at125+Kg. All hands were needed in the warm up
room to help the coaches with the warm-up; I was very impressed how every member
of the team was willing to give their all for the team.
Clive's training leading up the championships did not go well and it shows only
managed a hard 415Kg squat on his second attempt and did not take a third,
carrying a should injury since the world just managed 260Kg opener on the third
attempt on his bench, at sub-total Clive was 5Kg behind Asbjorn Randen the
Norwegian but was the lighter man so it was all down to the D/lift, Clive went
315Kg, 325Kg and what look like good 335Kg got it 2 to 1 to the take the title
only for the jury to overrule it saying he did not finish, a strong protest fell
on deaf ears so he had to settle for second place with a 1000Kg total, I told
Clive that he must get his shoulder sorted out because I believe the injury cost
him the European title.
Dean opened with 360Kg then went 375Kg but miss it twice in hindsight 370Kg
would have been a better call, on the bench he open with 285Kg then 295Kg just
missing 302.5Kg I think Dean will break the 300Kg barrier in a major this year,
started with a strong 330Kg on the D/lift going for the title had to take 355Kg
go it to his knees and had to settle for third place.
Jim Blanchflower our last lifter, we all had major concern whether he would get
his squat and bench pass, what a star Squat 357.5Kg, 375Kg, 382.5Kg bench 260Kg,
270Kg, 285Kg for a new M1 European record, narrowly missed his second D/lift on
technicality to finish with 300Kg on his third, 967.5Kg total, 8 from 9 for 6th
place, well done Jim you prove us all wrong your next target must be to break
the 1000Kg barrier.
This was a tremendous team performance lifters, coaches and management all
working together the results prove it, 2 gold and 4 bronze on the Squat, 2 gold,
1 silver and 3 bronze on Bench, 3 silver and 1 bronze on the D/lift, Overall 3
silver and 3 bronze a total of 22 Medals. As usual my thanks to Arun and Tony
for 5 days of very hard work I’m sure all the lifters appreciate it. Also a
special thanks to both Barrie Nelson and Andy Wright for their support.

THE 4 NATIONS DEVELOPMENT CUP FOR JUNIOR POWERLIFTING COMPETITION
2007
SATURDAY 21ST APRIL 2007
AT PARKHEAD & WANSBECK POWER SPORTS CLUB, ASHINGTON, NORTHUMBERLAND, ENGLAND
SUPPORTED BY THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION TYNE & WEAR
ORGANISED BY FRED MACKENZIE, STEWART McKAY, JOHN HALFACRE.
ORGANISED & RUN FOR JUNIOR POWERLIFTING AND THE SPORT
Friday 20th - after a six hour trip up from sunny Kent the weather had turned
cold and windy, so we were glad of a nice relaxing lounge at the Sandy Bay
Holiday Centre, Newbiggin by the Sea as this was to be our base for the next few
days. The Teams started to arrive mid-afternoon, and were allocated their
accommodation in six berth caravans with all the mod cons. At 19.00 hrs the
technical meeting was held, the referees were appointed their duties for the
next day, as there were forty seven lifters it was decided to bring the weigh-in
forward to 08.30 hrs. The rules for the competition were sorted out and agreed
to by all the Team Managers, it was decided that the top five lifters in each
team were to score points. After the meeting we had a good meal and a few
pints!! Some catching up with old friends and it was time to call it a night.
Saturday – After a hearty breakfast, the teams made their way to Parkhead &
Wansbeck Power Sports Club for the weigh-in. With experienced referees the
weigh-in was completed, forty seven lifters in one hour!!! The start was brought
forward to 10.15. The competition started on time and with Gavin Walker on the
mic the competition flowed along nicely, at the right time when lifters were
attempting personal bests or British record attempts, Gavin got the audience
participating and the noise was electrifying. The lifting was of good standard
and some lifters showed real promise for the future. The competition finished
with a buzz, and many lifters still on a high. Then it was back to Sandy Bay for
the banquet which was set for 20.00. After everyone had been fed and watered and
a few short speeches thanking everyone for their help and attendance which made
this first Junior 4 Nations such a great success. The trophy was presented to me
for the winning Team, England as Manager/Coach. Fred presented all lifters with
a beanie hat, which went down really well with the youngsters! (What’s a beanie
hat?). During the day all the lifters and referees had a hot meal and a buffet
provided by the Hirst Welfare Centre which was very much appreciated. While
standing, watching a young man under sixteen years of age trying to break a
personal best record it struck me that with three IPF Referees, three IPF Jury
men, and IPF Referee on the mic and an IPF referee coaching this lad, he had
over 200 years of experience willing him to succeed with this attempt, and when
he did, the enthusiasm by EVERYONE was something to be experienced. In what
other sport do you get so much backing by the older generation???
Sunday – After another good breakfast we said our goodbyes and most of us made
our way home, some stayed on as the accommodation was until Monday morning.
I would personally like to thank Fred McKenzie for getting the funding for this
event and all at Sandy Bay for looking after us and making us feel welcome.
Stuart McKay works very hard and does an excellent job. I would also like to
thank all the Lifters, Coaches, Managers, Loaders, Scorers and Referees.
I am looking for a venue for next years Junior 4 Nations but as Fred has done
such a good job this one will be hard to follow but am open to offers. The next
competition for Juniors that I’m trying to arrange will be an inter-divisional
competition again I need a venue, any offers???
After this weekend I have finally realised why I do this job, as to see so many
enthusiastic young lifters giving their all for the sport, WE MUST HELP AND
ENCOURAGE THEM.

DEVELOPMENT
The Powerlifting Steering Group have made a priority this coming year, to help to find and assist in the Development of Powerlifting throughout the country. To do this will require the help of everyone involved in the running of Gyms, Clubs and all other areas where lifting of any sort takes place.
In many Gyms and Clubs there are beginners, those that are improving year by year, and those that are almost at the stage where they just fail to make selection for various squads. A lot of these lifters are unknown outside their own area, and an awful lot do not manage to qualify for the major events.
On the Calendar of Events for 2007, you will see that there are Junior/Senior and Novice squad sessions. These squad sessions are specifically for us to help to encourage these lifters. As always there are elite squads for those that will be selected for Internationals, and for those that do not make it to those squads, we must help them to develop so that they are not disillusioned with the sport, and feel left out. Therefore, we ask for your help, because those of you that run Gyms and Clubs, and those of you that have youngsters and newcomers at your Gyms, can see first hand those that have both potential and enthusiasm for the sport. These are the people, regardless of age, that we need to help in the development of the sport.
Please see the very simple form attached, which can be completed in a short time, and which will enable us to look through and prepare invites to the squads. We will increase the squads we will hold, if the response is good enough, and we will also have squads in other parts of the country, to try to avoid too much travelling. Your help would be most gratefully appreciated, so that we can give these lifters encouragement for the future.
I and the Steering Group thank you in advance.
Regards
Arthur Hoey

To all divisional secretaries
As you will no doubt know the British Bench Press is scheduled for 17th and 18th February 2007 and will be held at Tysley, Birmingham. I expect that the competition will be scheduled very much like last year, with women, masters and juniors on Saturday, and seniors with masters 1 on Sunday. This will be finalised ahead of issuing invitations.
Closing date for entries will be 3rd February 2007 and invites will be sent out to you on 20th January 2007 for you to forward to your divisions members. Could I have by the 19th January 2007 all qualifying results for your division, and please make sure that these contain the year of birth (or date of birth) so that I can see the age classes for which they have qualified. If applicable I am happy to take these from a website, if you could just provide the links to the specific events.

WALES V ENGLAND
POWERLIFTING INTERNATIONAL
SWANSEA 18 11 2006
The venue provided more than ample warm up space and the competition hall and catering facilities stood up well to the day’s events. The competitors were divided into two groups and the centre referee Richard Parker got proceedings underway with Rachel Cork Wales lifting first. Barry Sheeny ,England certainly looked the business and put together 215kg /157.5kg/262.5kg for a total of 635kg. Not bad at 66.5kg bodyweight. Dai Todd u23 totalled 600kg for the first time. Welsh lifter Darren George managed a solid 670kg, only getting 3 lifts in but missing the British 90kg qualifier by a whisker. Englishman Steve Bright lifted very positively on all three lifts and fully deserved his excellent total of 730kg. Wales other 90kg class lifter Nick Rees started well with a PBsquat of 257.5kg but following a nasty accident when benching 162.5kg had to withdraw Injured. John Porter also had to pull out after the squat. Chris Davies Wales put together a 700kg total at 94.3kg bodyweight and looks ready to put together a big total in the near future.
One of this summer’s classic battles at domestic level has been between Paul Hooker and John Mitchell in the unequipped Masters One 100kg class. British records changed hands between these two many times. On this day John took the advantage beating several British Masters1 total record held by Paul .He went 270kg/155kg/275kg totalling 700kg. Two Welsh lifters both weighing just over 100kg produced good numbers. The ever-present Geraint Nicholas Achieved 677.5kg in good style. Oliver Griffith just 17 produced an immaculate 680kg with255kg squat,165kg bench, and a 260kg deadlift. This would make him medal potential at next years World Sub Juniors in France.
Tasha Purdue lifted for the Welsh powerlifting team for the first time. Although Tasha is only a diminutive 65kg she has Great Spirit and courage And certainly impressed us all. She is a fine Weightlifter but has little experience of Powerlifting and her performance of 135kg 70kg 155kg totalling 360kg looked easy. Wales other Lady lifter Rachel Cork, an under 20 in the 75kg class, improved her P.B. total to 282.5KG. Jim Blanchflower had a testing start; missing his first two squats due to lack of depth. He then got 350kg on his 3rd attempt. However matters got worse when he missed all three bench press attempts at a huge 270kg. This man has a big heart and will bounce back very soon.
Although Nick Rees, injured, and the promising Junior Mike Smith did not complete, Wales won the match based on the Wilkes points scored by each team. Barry Sheedy whose performances have been described earlier won the best lifter award presented by the B.W.L.A. It was good to see our powerlifting manager Arthur Hoey present .He spent a great deal of time talking to members as well as watching the lifting with a keen eye.
Steve Bright deserves a special mention for all the work he did in helping to provide equipment for this special occasion. Thanks are also due to Phil’s wife who worked so hard to make this event successful and the caretaker and staff of the community centre.
What is so good about our sport is that so many top lifters are prepared to put in so much effort on our behalf like John and Monica Porter. This day was down to one such man in particular and Phil RICHARD is his name. THANKYOU PHIL for an enjoyable contest organised by you just a few days after returning from a successful personal and team performance at the World Championships.
My final expression of thanks is to the referees and spotters who undertook their duties diligently and fairly. What would we do without them? Thankyou gentlemen.
We all now look forward to next years Four Nations.
