Benefits of Powerlifting

Strength & Health

Powerlifting focuses on developing muscular strength throughout the body. The sport can also increase bone density, lean muscle mass and improve posture, particularly among young people. In addition the sport encourages coordination, confidence and a healthy attitude to life. Club session are overseen by qualified Referees and Instructors, to ensure you perform exercises with good form and developed balanced strength, minimising the risk of injury. UK Sport research has shown that Powerlifting has a low risk of injury compared to most sports on the school curriculum.

Anti-Doping

The Club and the Sport have a zero tolerance approach to all forms of drug use. It is virtually impossible to use 'social' drugs without such use having a severely negative impact on training; for this reason, the sport can help to steer people away from drug abuse. In addition, with strict anti-doping controls it will be very difficult for any member to use performance enhancing drugs. All training members are required to register with the National Governing Body. Those looking to compete may only do so in sanctioned competitions, which have strict anti-doping controls, with testing both in competition and out of competition, carried out independently by UK Sport and the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) and approved by the World Anti-Doping Association (WADA).

Social Inclusion

The Club and the Sport have an open membership policy. Powerlifting is very much a team sport; to progress, it is essential to train with like minded people, for motivation, enjoyment and safety. Both in the Club and at competition, lifters will meet and interact with different members of the community, with whom their paths would not normally cross. With the teamwork involved in training and preparing for competitions, this develops tolerance, better understanding, and ultimately, respect.

Personal Development

Powerlifting develops confidence and self esteem through progression in the sport, meeting goals and social interaction. Consistency and discipline will lead to success in powerlifting regardless of where you start from. For those serious about progressing in the sport, there is a very real chance of national and international participation. In addition there are frequent opportunities within the Club to support and volunteer, with assistance and funding for courses and qualifications to develop your own training and allow you to develop other members of the Club.
