Greater London Unequipped Powerlifting Championships

The Greater London Powerlifting Championships featured combined equipped and unequipped competitions, with a total of thirteen from the Club competing across the two, eleven competing unequipped, and for eight of those representing the Club, this was their first full Powerlifting competition.

67.5kg Class

First up in the 67.5kg, Peter was competing in his first full powerlifting competition, after competing the South East Deadlift Championships in October. Peter, a Masters 3 (60+) lifter, opened with a comfortable lift of 60kg on the squat. Peter then went on to take equally comfortable lifts of 70kg and 80kg, sinking all three attempts deep and recovering strong for three white lights. Moving into the Bench Press, Peter pressed 65kg on his opening attempt, to secure qualification for the British Unequipped Bench Press, and set a Greater London M3 Record. In the second round, Peter was able to lock out 70kg to improve on his record, but 72.5kg proved too much on the day. In the Deadlift, Peter was looking to improve on his 140kg from the South East Championships, but opening on 130kg, Peter lost his line, and let the weight drift away from him, missing the lift. But in the second he got it right, for a strong lift. In the final round, he went on to pull 145kg, for a new personal best, another Greater London M3 record, and the divisional title, with a 295kg total.

75kg Class

In the next week class, there were two first-time competitors from the Club. Charlie , who was looking to hit some personal bests, and get a good total to qualify for the British U16 Championships in February, and Leon, who was hoping to set some records in his last year as a Junior. In the first two rounds, both Charlie and Leon really rose to the occasion and destroyed their attempts of 80kg and 90kg for Charlie, and 150kg and 165kg, for Leon. In the final round Charlie went for a personal best, and triple figures, with 100kg, and after another good set-up made the weight look effortless. Leon then stepped up to 180kg, a new Divisional U23 record, with a touch of nerves coming in, Leon descended with the weight rapidly, but was able to recover, for a good lift, and a strong lead in the class. Moving into the Bench Press, both lifters made quick work with their opening attempts of 57.5kg and 100kg. In the second Charlie, again looked strong with 65kg, while Leon pressed 112.5kg for a new Greater London U23 record. For their last attempts, Charlie made another comfortable lift with 72.5kg, to secure qualification for the British Unequipped Bench Press Championships, and a new Greater London U18 record, while Leon nailed 120kg for divisional U23 and Open Bench Press records, and qualification for the Open British Unequipped Bench Press Championships. This also gave Leon a 30kg lead going into the deadlift. Again both Charlie and Leon were spurred on by the crowd and made their opening two attempts of 100kg and 115kg for Charlie, and 150kg and 170kg for Leon, look like warm-ups. In the final round Charlie attempted 127.5kg, for a big personal best and 300kg total, firing the weight off the floor, Charlie finished the lift with a bit to spare. Leon also went for a personal best of 185kg, and again he made the lift look comfortable, to take the divisional title with 485kg, a divisional record total, and qualification for the British Unequipped Powerlifting Championships.

82.5kg Class

Both Adi and Freddie were in their first ever competition, with Freddie returning from University for the event. Both lifters received white lights for strong attempts on their opening two lifts, with Adi hitting 120kg and 135kg, and Freddie successful with 115kg and 130kg. In the final round, Freddie was able  to match his gym best of 137.5kg, while Adi attempted a personal best of 150kg, and after sinking the weight deep, he fought it all the way to lockout for a good lift. Moving onto the Bench Press, both lifters opened with comfortable weights that would qualify them for the British Unequipped Bench Press Championships, with Freddie successful at 85kg, and Adi pressing 95kg. In the second round, Adi attempted 102.5kg for a new divisional record, but lost his line, and was unable to finish the press. Freddie, however was successful with 95kg, to claim a new Greater London U20 Unequipped Bench record. In the final round, both Adi and Freddie, attempted 102.5kg. First up, Adi stayed in control for a good lift, and a divisional U23 record, and Freddie also made the press, increasing the divisional U20 record. But although both lifters were successful with the weight, Adi takes the U23 record on virtue of lighter bodyweight. In the deadlift, both Adi and Freddie looked strong with their first two attempts, with Adi pulling 150kg and 170kg, and Freddie lifting 130kg and 140kg. In the final round, Freddie was able to lock out a personal best of 152.5kg, while Adi attempted 185kg, to set a divisional U23 record, but unfortunately he was unable to finish the lift. Adi finished with 422.5kg and the Bronze medal in the class, while Freddie finished in fourth place with 392.5kg.

90kg Class

Another two competitors from the Club weighed-in for the 90kg class; Forbes MacPherson, competing in his first competition, and Brian Ling, competing in his first full powerlifting competition, after competing in the Greater London Bench Press Championships in March, with a successful 80kg press. Brian and Forbes both looked confident, getting white lights on their opening two attempts in the squat with 120kg and 135kg, and 125kg and 137.5kg. In the final round Brian loaded up a personal best of 142.5kg, and after sinking the weight deep, battled the bar all the way to lock out for a very slow, but successful lift. Meanwhile Forbes took 150kg, and held a really good line, for a strong final lift. In the Bench Press, both lifters started off well, with Brian successful on 80kg and 85kg, to improve on his lift from March, and Forbes pressing 100kg and 107.5kg for two good lifts. In the last round, Brian took a modest increase to 87.5kg, for a good lift, and a bit to spare, and Forbes received white lights for a new personal best of 115kg. Then in the deadlift, Brian and Forbes continued the good run, with easy attempts on 140kg and 155kg for Brian, and 150kg and 170kg for Forbes, to both hit eight out of eight lifts in their first competition. For his last lift of the day, Brain jumped to a personal best of 170kg, but although locking the weight out, a slight dip in the lift meant he was awarded red lights for his efforts, leaving him on 385kg and fourth place. Forbes also moved up 15kg, for another strong lift with 185kg, a 450kg total and Bronze in the 90kg class.

100kg Class

This was the biggest class for the Club, with three lifters. Tim Barrett was competing for the first time, while Tim Grove and Tom Ellingham were looking to improve on their totals from the All England Powerlifting Championships, of 520kg, and 487.5kg respectively. All three were successful on their opening two attempts, with Tim Barrett making his 125kg and 140kg lifts look comfortable, and both Tim Grove and Tom matching for 172.5kg and 187.5kg. In the last round, Tim Barrett took a jump to 160kg, and after sinking it deep, and pausing to make sure, battled the weight back up to lockout. Next up, Tim Grove took a modest increase to 195kg, to secure a personal best, and lifting the weight strong, looked good for a little bit more. Last up, having already lifted a personal best in the second round, Tom went for 200kg, but after struggling to stay tight at the bottom was unable to recover. In the first round of the Bench Press, all three looked comfortable on their opening attempts, with Tim Barrett pressing 80kg, Tom lifting 112.5kg, and Tim Grove successful on 120kg. In the second round, Tim Barrett made a confident jump to 87.5kg for white lights, unfortunately Tom lost his line on 117.5kg and was unable to recover during the press, but Tim Grove made quick work of 127.5kg to match his competition best. In the final round, Tim Barrett got stuck under a personal best of 95kg, Tom put right his miss from the second round by pressing 117.5kg, and Tim Grove made a comfortable lift at 130kg, to take a personal best on a weight that had proved elusive in a number of competitions. In the last discipline, all three lifters comfortably pulled their opening two attempts, with Tim Barrett lifting 150kg and 160kg, and Tim Grove and Tom tied with 180kg and 195kg. In the last round, Tim Barrett finished the day with a 170kg pull, a 417.5kg total and fourth place. Next up Tim Grove pulled another personal best of 205kg, for a 530kg total, and securing the silver in the 100kg class. Lastly, Tom took a big jump to 210kg, to set a new Greater London U23 Unequipped record. With a good drive off of the floor, Tom let the bar drift away from him, but was still able to muscle the lift to lockout for a good lift. With that effort, Tom finished with a 515kg total and the Bronze in the 100kg class.

125kg Class

Last up for the Club, Ben Banks was competing in the 125kg after returning from the World Championships in India a few weeks before. In the squat Ben opened with a comfortable 200kg, before moving to 220kg for another strong lift. In the final round, Ben jumped to 240kg, for a Greater London Unequipped record, and stayed nice and tight for another solid lift and white lights. Moving to the Bench Press, Ben's opening two attempts of 180kg and 195kg both looked fast, so Ben stepped up to 210kg, an attempt on his existing British record at 205.5kg. Although shaking slightly on the descent, Ben pressed the weight smoothly to lockout. Onto the deadlift, Ben made comfortable attempts with 260kg and 282.5kg to improve on his unequipped total from the All England Championships, before taking a jump to 300kg. Although the weight came off the floor slowly, Ben stayed with the lift, and fought all the way to lockout, for white lights, a 750kg total and the divisional title in the 125kg class.

This was great divisional competition, with many spectators turning up to watch, as well as the largest competition for the Club to date, with a total of eleven members lifting unequipped, and a further two in the equipped competition. With some great performances along the way, everyone will need to get back to train to get ready to compete in the Greater London Bench Press Championships in the Spring. Many thanks to Rebecca Yeoh for refereeing the whole day, and Ed Hawthorne for coaching.
