Greater London Equipped Powerlifting Championships

This year saw a combined Greater London Powerlifting Championships, featuring both Equipped and Unequipped lifting. In the Equipped competition, the Club had two entries, Andy Ly competing at 75kg, and Ola Oyefeso at 100kg, both looking to qualify for the British Championships, after focusing on the unequipped for a while.

After weighing-in at bang on 75kg, Andy was last out in the first group with a very comfortable 180kg opening attempt. He then jumped to 210kg, and this time putting on his knee wraps, he struggled to get down but recovered smoothly for white lights. In the final round, Andy took a modest increase to 220kg, and finished with a good lift with a bit to spare. Moving onto the Bench Press Andy opened with an easy 110kg, before taking 125kg, to secure his invitation for the British Bench Press Championships in January. This time the lift was a bit slower, but Andy still pressed the weight in a smooth motion for white lights. But passing his third attempt, Andy went straight onto the Deadlift. Loading up 235kg for his first attempt, a comfortable lift, this was enough to meet the qualifying total of 580kg. In the second round, Andy jumped to 255kg, for a 600kg total, and another strong lift. For his final attempt, Andy went for 270kg, only 10kg off his previous best in the 90kg class, but it proved too much on the day, and the bar slowed at his knees. However, Andy finished with a good total, the London title, and British qualification, and looks well on way to returning to form following his 18-month break from the sport.

In the final group, after picking up a slight injury in his upper back, Ola was only looking to get a qualifying total, but possibly put in a big pull to take the title. Opening at 260kg in the squat, with some discomfort from the bar resting on the injured part of his back, Ola lowered the weight cautiously, but then recovered confidently for white lights. Passing his next attempts, Ola moved onto a 155kg opening lift in the Bench Press. Although again in some discomfort, Ola made the lift, and began to prepare for the deadlift. Needing a 720kg total to qualify, Ola loaded 305kg onto the bar to secure qualification. The deadlift was the only lift that was unaffected by the tightness in his upper back, so Ola was confident going into the pull. The weight came off the floor fast, almost to his surprise, but he was able drive his hips through to finish the lift, for white lights, and British Qualification. This lift also put Ola in a strong lead for the title over Wood Green's Gary Mitchell. In the second round, Ola put 320kg on the bar, for a big personal best. Although the weight came off the floor strong, he was too slow to drive his hips into the bar, and he weight dug into his thigh preventing a lockout. But in the final round he had one more shot, and this time got it right for a good lift, leaving him with a 735kg total. This was enough to take the Greater London title and the Eddie Pengelly Memorial Cup as the Best Lifter, a good result all things considered!
