British Deadlift Championships

The first National Deadlift-only competition was held in Milton Keynes. The Club's Andy Ly was the sole entrant to the competition, as he begins training hard once again following his return to Powerlifting after taking a year out. After only a few weeks of training, Andy competed at the All England Unequipped Powerlifting Championships, placing a close second, which included a strong 245kg deadlift. This time round, Andy was looking to take the title and improve on his last result. Opening with a light 220kg, Andy fired the weight off the floor, but so much so that he lost control at the top dipping slightly, and losing the lift. But still confident, Andy moved up to 240kg, a lift that would secure the title in the 82.5kg class. This time he got the line right, and finished the lift looking strong. With the title in the bag, Andy took a massive jump to 265kg, to improve on his performance at his last competition. But the weight proved too much on the day, and although coming off the floor fast, he got stuck midway up his thighs.

Although, quite a small competition for its first outing, with a little over thirty competitors, there were some strong performances, including Derby's Phil Watkins, a Masters One (40+) competitor, who took the Best Lifter Award with 305kg deadlift in the 90kg class.
