South West Unequipped Powerlifting Championships

Tim Grove made a last minute entry as a guest into the South West divisional competition. Tim competed in his first full competition back in April at the Anglian Open, hitting 185kg on the squatting, pressing 125kg and pulling 225kg. Since the competition, Tim has been working on making the transition from the conventional style of deadlift (where the bar is gripped outside of the legs) to the Sumo style (where  the bar is gripped inside the legs). Tim was therefore looking to push up his numbers in the Squat and Bench Press, and get a competition Sumo deadlift on the board.

Tim opened on the Squat with a comfortable 170kg, before moving up to 180kg, for another successful lift. For his final attempt, Tim went for a personal best of 190kg, but although coming up strong with the weight, the side referees indicated that  he had not reached the required depth, and so awarded him two red lights, failing the lift, two to one against.

Moving into the Bench Press, Tim opened with an easy 120kg, then went on to match his second lift from the Anglian Open, with 125kg. In the third Round, looking to improve on his personal best of 127.5kg from the Greater London Unequipped Bench Press Championships, Tim attempt 130kg. But although lowering the weight confidently, Tim came off his chest slowly, and got stuck midway into the lift.

In the final discipline, Tim opened light with 150kg, being cautious with his first competition Sumo lift. But the lift was comfortable, and he progressed onto 165kg for his second attempt, again making the lift comfortably. In the final round, Tim went up to 180kg, but yet again locked out the weight with some strength to spare.

Although his total was down from the Anglian, this was a good first outing for Tim with the Sumo Deadlift. Tim is next looking to compete in the All England at the end of August, so with a good run to build up for the competition, he should hopefully be able to hit some strong personal bests there.
