South East Unequipped Powerlifting Championships

Ola travelled down to Woking to get some competition numbers to base his training off of, after really focusing on his technique and raw strength for the last few months. Also after making good progress on the deadlift, he was looking to have a shot at the British Unequipped 100kg Deadlift record, which currently stood at 301kg.

Opening with 200kg on the squat, Ola sunk the weight low, and drove it up smoothly for white lights. Taking a modest increase to 210kg for his second attempt, again he hit good depth and forced the weight through to lockout after only a slight stick in the middle of the lift. For his final attempt he stepped up to 220kg, to set a new Greater London record. Descending smoothly, Ola came a little out of line as he drove up from the bottom of the squat, but scooping his head up locked the weight out comfortably, and finished with 9 white lights on the squat.

In the bench press, Ola opened with an easy 130kg, before increasing the bar to 135kg for his second. Though a little slower in the press, Ola still made the lift comfortably. For his final attempt he moved to 140kg; this would match his best from the Greater London Unequipped Bench Press in March. Although losing his line a little, Ola still looked like he had a bit to spare, making the press smoothly.

In the final discipline, the deadlift, Ola was looking to make a big impression. With his opening lift of 270kg, he would already be breaking the Greater London Unequipped Deadlift record, and setting a new total record. Setting himself up for the lift, he was a little quick, and snatched at the bar, leaving himself unstable at the bottom, but after coming off the floor slowly, he accelerated the weight all the way to the finish. He would need to get a stronger drive off the floor if he was going to lockout the bigger weights. Taking a small jump to 285kg, this time Ola got it right, getting tight at the bottom and making a really strong lift for white lights. For his final attempt he loaded up 302.5kg, for a new British Unequipped record. The weight came off the floor slowly and began to pull him forward, but as the bar moved up his shins he was able to pull it back and finish the second half of the pull comfortably. Holding the weight at lockout, Ola gave a big smile and a few nods, before receiving white lights and a new British Record.

Ola finished the day with a Greater London Unequipped Record total of 662.5kg, getting all nine lifts with three white lights, it was a really solid performance, and something to build off of in the months ahead.
