Anglian Open Powerlifting Championships

The Club's sole competitor, Tim Grove, was competing in the unequipped section of the competition in his first three-lift competition. Also in attendance from Club were Ben Banks, as referee, and Roy Banks in support. Tim successfully bench pressed 127.5kg in the Greater London Unequipped Bench Press Championships two weeks before, in his first ever competition, and was now looking to mark up a competition total across all three disciplines.

In the second group of lifters, Tim opened with a 160kg squat, sinking the weight and driving the weight smoothly to lock out for three white lights. Jumping to 175kg for his second attempt, he again sank the weight, but had to work to finish the lift. Raising the bar to 185kg, this could well have been a challenge, but really attacking  the lift, Tim hit good depth in one clean movement before comfortably finishing the lift, maybe with a bit to spare. Finishing the squat, with three good lifts and nine white lights, for his first competition, this was a good start to the day.

Next up in the Bench Press Tim opened with a comfortable 120kg, but moving to 125kg for his second lift. However this attempt proved a bit tougher, but a steady drive saw him finished the lift for white lights. For his final attempt he called for 130kg to improve on his competition best of 127.5kg from two weeks before. But with a slow drive off his chest, he got stuck half way into the lift, and had to settle with 125kg.

In the final discipline, the deadlift, Tim stepped up with another strong opener of 190kg. For his second attempt, Tim took a big increase to 210kg, but again made the lift look comfortable. So for his final attempt he went for a personal best attempt of 225kg. With a slow drive off the floor, Tim lost his form, but was able to grind the weight all the way up for a successful lift, and a 535kg total and second place. This was a great start for Tim, completing eight out of his nine lifts, and with the British unequipped Qualifying total of 570kg to aim for, he has a clear focus for the next few months.

In addition to Tim, there were a number of London lifters in the competition, including Dominic Patmore from Bethnal Green, who won Tim's weight class, and was also awarded best unequipped lifter. The competition was also streamed  live on the internet, and videos of the day can be found with the results (Tim competed in group 2).
