South East Powerlifting
Championships
With John Halfacre
on the microphone for the South East Divisional Championships, Daniel
Taylor had travelled down to Dover to compete in his last competition as
a Sub-Junior (Under 18) l ifter.
After moving up a weight class to the 100kg category on his return from
the World Juniors in South Africa, Daniel had been focusing on his squat
technique, with a view to having a go at the British Sub-Junior record
of 230kg. After a successful opening attempt, Daniel let his knees drift
forward on his second attempt, but still managed a good lift. For his
final attempt he called for 232.5kg, a British record. Holding his line,
he hit the weight well and made the lift look reasonably comfortable.
Daniel then went on to Bench Press 130kg, and pull a personal best on
the deadlift of 227.5kg, for a 590kg total. Moving into the Under 20s
age group next year, with some more hard training, Daniel will be aiming
to increase his confidence in the squat, and take full advantage of the
leg power he developed from his former narrow stance squatting. Daniel
will need to make some big gains before he attempts the British U20s
100kg squat record, which stands at over 300kg.
Also in Dover, Aaron
Cooper, Daniels former competitor in the Sub-Junior 90kg Class, who also
competed in South Africa, hit a massive personal best on the Bench Press
of 170kg to take the British Sub-Junior record.
