Anglian Open Bench Press Championships

The Club Treasurer, Ed Hawthorne, was competing in his first competition since joining the Club a little over a year ago. Ed was supported by a number of members of the Club, including Ben Banks in the referee's chair, and Faisal Ahmed Spaul in the warm-up room. Ed was lifting unequipped in the competition in preparation to taking on a full competition early next year. Ed had dieted down to make the 90kg class, which unfortunately turned out to be the largest class of the day, with Ed up against seven other lifters.

After successfully making his bodyweight, Ed opened light with 125kg. Although not as easy as he would have liked, Ed made a solid press for three white lights. For his second attempt, Ed loaded 132.5kg onto the bar. Lowering the bar smoothly to his chest, the press got off to a slow start, and Ed had to battle to finish the lift. For his final attempt, Ed called for 137.5kg to be loaded to the bar. He needed to get a better drive off his chest to make the weight, but unfortunately the dieting had taken too much out of him, and he had to settle with his second attempt of 132.5kg. However, although somewhat disappointed that lift left Ed in the Bronze medal position.

Across the competition there were some big lifts, with Pinda Singh pushing up his own British 110kg Bench only record by 5kg to 260kg.
