East Midlands Powerlifting Championships 2007

After qualifying for the British Bench Press Championships back in October at the Anglian Bench Press Championships, Jay was setting out to qualify for the British Powerlifting Championships at this competition. This was Jay's first powerlifting competition using the full equipment, and she was accompanied by training partner from the Club, Rebecca Yeoh.

Jay is still building her confidence in the supportive equipment, and she was going to need to lift some personal bests to make the 300kg total required. Opening at 100kg on the squat, gave Jay a comfortable start to the competition. Her next lift of 110kg, would leave Jay in the running for qualification. Jay made the lift to the satisfaction of the judges, a competition best, and she raised the bar to 115kg. Getting this lift would have taken some of the pressure off the deadlift, but unfortunately, despite lifting the weight Jay was unsteady at the top and took a step slightly before the referee gave the signal to rack, failing the lift two to one against.

Next up in the Bench Press, Jay opened at a comfortable 65kg. For her second attempt she took 70kg, while she lifted this weight to qualify for the British Bench Press Championships back in October, it is more difficult to perform the Bench Press after having maxed out on the squat. However, Jay came through and completed the lift. In her third attempt, Jay put a competition best on the bar of 72.5kg, but it was too much on the day.

Moving on to the deadlift, Jay started with a comfortable opener of 100kg, however, she didn't attack the weight and lost her line off the floor, failing to lift the bar to lockout. Taking the same weight again, Jay managed to get herself psyched up and lifted the weight comfortably to get on the board and earn a total of 280kg. Needing a 120kg deadlift to qualify, Jay's confidence was knocked after the first attempt, and she only took 110kg, which she ended up lifting comfortably. Jay just missed out on qualifying, but with a few more months training, she should qualify with ease, and still make the cut off for the National Championships in June.
