Great Britain Junior Powerlifting Squad

British Barbell hosted the first Great Britain Junior Powerlifting Squad of the year with a total seventeen lifters who were invited following their performances at the British Junior Powerlifting Championships back in January. John Halfacre, the Manager of the Great Britain Juniors, oversaw the session as all the lifters performed under the scrutiny of a number of coaches.

This large squad was aimed at developing lifters, and was an even split between sub-junior (under 18s) and junior (under 23s) age groups. Future squads will work towards preparing and selecting a team to take away to the European Junior Powerlifting Championships, in June in the Ukraine and the World Junior & Sub-Junior Powerlifting Championships, in South Africa in September.

Four of the lifters represented Great Britain last year, and so hope to build on their experiences to move further up the rankings and hopefully come away with some medals. Meanwhile the remaining fourteen lifters, are up and coming young athletes, who all have the potential to go on and represent their country.

During the squad, all the lifters worked up to their opening weights on each of the three lifts, with coaches commenting on their technique, preparing them for the strict judging from international referees. The squad aims to leave each person with areas to focus on in their training and the enthusiasm to continue to train hard in the sport.

Two members of the British Barbell team were lifting, with both Andy Ly, in the 90kg class, and Faisal Ahmed Spaul, in the 125kg class, in their last year's as Juniors, they were both attempting to impress the coaches and earn their spots on the team. Andy represented Great Britain twice last year, coming 6th in the European Junior Powerlifting Championships in Bulgaria and 7th in the World Junior Championships in France.

The Club coped successfully with the number of lifters, however, following the forthcoming refurbishment, we should be in a better position to

host these larger squads, and allow for a greater capacity at such events.
